The Statue of Liberty is a colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, New York City, in the United States. The copper statue was a gift from the people of France to celebrate the American centennial in 1886 and was created by Gustav Eiffel, the designer of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Liberty Island has, at various times, been a private residence, a quarantine station and a military fort. However, it was disused when chosen as the location for the Statue of Liberty.
