Lady Liberty takes inspiration from many different legends and goddesses. However, the most common symbolic reference that is drawn from the statue is Libertas, the goddess of freedom, who was widely worshiped in ancient Rome, particularly by emancipated slaves.

The first time Lady Liberty was introduced on the U.S. coin was in 1793. She was chosen as the design since she is considered to be the perfect representation of the American people and the country's promise of freedom. Her design has changed significantly throughout the years, from a side profile to a full-body portrait; Lady Liberty has seen many transformations. This new design shows her standing with her leg exposed, still wearing the Roman stola but with an armoured top.
