Designed by French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi, with the framework provided by Gustave Eiffel, the Statue of Liberty was proposed in the wake of the abolishment of slavery within the United States. The statue modeled after the Roman Goddess, Libertas, was proposed to embody the spirit of freedom, democracy, and liberty, the quintessential ideals of America. The monument was designed and sculpted within France and shipped to the United States as an acknowledgment that their newly formed ideas were supported. Since its official dedication on October 28th, 1886, the Statue of Liberty stands tall as a beacon of hope to the rest of the world, as the entry point to the land of opportunity.

The symbolism of the Statue of Liberty is more than iconic, it is deeply entrenched within the fabric of United States history, as it greeted Newcomers to the United States on Ellis Island, who sought a better life. The portrait of Lady Liberty adorns the reverse side and is contained over a blank field. The image is encapsulated by thirteen stars, indicative of the thirteen original colonies of the United States.

The obverse depicts a torch that bears the light of enlightenment in the form of American Ideals, such as Liberty, freedom, and democracy. The flame is illustrated as burning bright and strong. Liberty serves as the legend, with the denomination, and purity also included.
