Shawnee National Forest was created by President Roosevelt in 1939. Much of the land was exhausted farmland that was rehabilitated through the planting of new trees. The park includes several unique geographical areas, including the Little Grand Canyon which is over 200 feet deep.

The obverse of the coin features the John Flanagan effigy of George Washington, as it has appeared on US quarters since 1932.
