The grizzly bear is one of the largest carnivores found in North America, although they avoid human contact in spite of their reputation.

The reverse of this coin features a grizzly bear captured in mid-roar, similar to the 99999 pure gold coin. However, this much larger silver coin presented the artist a better canvas to work with. The background is filled with a remote northern forest with a river running through it, all executed with highly detailed engraving.
