Armillary coins take their name from the armillary sphere, invented by Erathosthenes circa 200 B.C. An armillary sphere is a model of a globe that is split along it's equator and other meridians.

The Valcambi armillary coins have the same functionality as their CombiBars - a larger sized gold coin that can be broken into smaller, fractional 1/4 oz coins without any loss of material. The four individual coins are attached to each other in concentric circles, and can be twisted to resemble an armillary sphere.
