Barbie has been a favourite in children's toys for centuries and a childhood staple for many young girls worldwide. Barbie officially debuted on March 9, 1959, during the American International Toy Fair in New York. The original design for Barbie came from the German Bid Lili doll that came out on August 12, 1955. In 1964, Mattel acquired rights to Bid Lili so the company would have all copyright abilities for the doll that looked very similar to Barbie.

In 1986, Mattel released Barbie and The Rockers, an homage to MTV-influenced rock 'n roll fashion and a rival to Hasbro's Jem and the Holograms doll line.

In addition to Barbie, The Rockers included four additional alliteratively named band-mates: Dana, Dee Dee, Diva, and Derek. The rockers were dressed to reflect the latest fashion trends of the time, with outfits featuring neon colours, glittery fabrics, headbands, leggings, colourful makeup, and contemporary jewellery and accessories.
