In 1976 Montréal became the first Canadian city to host the Olympic Games. The 21st Olympiad, held from July 17 to August 1, 1976, included memorable performances from many athletes, including Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci and American decathlete Caitlyn Jenner.

The Royal Canadian Mint started issuing commemorative coins in 1973 to honour the 21st Olympiad, which was to be held in Montreal, Quebec, and to help finance the games. The RCM issued 28 silver coins and 2 gold coins.
