As he was such an important figure in American history, Congress decided to honour the bicentennial of his birth with a special silver dollar commemorative issue. The obverse features a stunning portrait of the President, and the reverse contains the final 43 words of his famous Gettysburg Address. The coins were issued in proof and mint state finishes, and surcharges were added to support the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission.
