The Jefferson Nickel is the five-cent coin minted by the United States Mint. It has been minted since 1938. From 1942 to 1945, the Jefferson nickels started being made with an alloy consisting of 56% copper, 35% silver and 9% manganese. These are also known amongst coin collectors as silver war nickels, as they were minted during World War II.
