The Dutch Gulden was the legal tender currency circulating in the Netherlands from the 15th Century to 2002. The term comes from Middle Dutch and means “golden”. It was one of the first coins to bear inscriptions, which were used to discourage people from scraping the coin for its precious silver contents. The Gulden coins used a fractional numbering structure for some units.

Each of the coins maintains a similar, but not always identical, design on both the obverse and reverse.
