The 2022 Little John one ounce coin is the third and final release of the Royal Mint's Myths and Legends three coin series celebrating the famous tales of Robin Hood. In 2021 the Royal Mint began the Myths and Legends series, which is a collection paying a homage to some legendary characters of the United Kingdom's folklore. The first release was the Robin Hood one ounce coin, Maid Marian appeared on the second release, and lastly this bullion coin featuring Little John.

Little John is a trusted and reliable companion to Robin Hood in the tales. Despite his name, the warrior is portrayed as a heavy-build 7 foot-tall man, which makes the name an irony. This faithful sidekick would follow and help Robin Hood into battle. He plays an important role in "Rogues of Sherwood Forest".

These coins feature a design of Little John on the reverse, which stands boldly wielding the quarterstaff amongst trees.
