In 1986 the United States of America launched the first year of issue for the 1 oz American Eagle gold coin through the Gold Bullion Act of 1985.
The obverse of the coin features a full-length rendition of the Augustus Saint-Gaudens Lady Liberty with flowing hair, an olive branch in her left hand and a torch in her right hand with the Capitol building in the distant background. The reverse of the coin was designed by Miley Busiek and features a flying male eagle, also with an olive branch, and a female eagle and her hatchlings in her nest.
