Montserrat is an island in the Caribbean known for its mountainous and volcanic geology. These silver coins feature one of the critically endangered species of birds that are endemic to the island: the Montserrat Oriole. A series of eruptions of the Soufriere volcano was responsible for destroying over half of the forests in which these birds inhabit, which led the oriole population to decline over time. The male birds have a black head, hood, and wings, and a burnt-orange or tawny breast, belly, and rump. The female Montserrat orioles are generally olive with some orange accents.
