The Vikings were groups of Northern European warriors that explored, raided and colonized different parts of Europe, and even reached as far as the North American continent in their journeys. The Viking Age lasted from the late 8th century to the early 11th century. In contrast to the fame of savagery and violence, the Vikings developed advanced technologies (for the time they lived), as well as trading routes and political systems.

The Norsemen were one of the most progressive societies regarding women's rights for the time, in which Viking women had the rights to own property, choose their partners, rule politically and battle. The name given to female Viking warriors was Skjaldmær, which translates to Shield-maiden. Their existence was debated for centuries, but archaeological and historical accounts show some evidence of female warriors being buried with weapons and artifacts.
