The 1804 Dollar featuring an image of Liberty was released by the United States Mint not in 1804, but rather throughout the 1930s. The coins were not produced for circulation but were issued as commemorative proofs intended for use on a diplomatic mission as gifts to foreign dignitaries.

Edmund Roberts was given a number of the 1804 Dollars for use in a diplomatic mission to Siam and Muscat. Roberts was to give the 1804 Dollars away as gifts to foreign dignitaries on his travels. He distributed the first sets of 1804 Dollars in 1834 and 1835, with additional sets ordered and given to Roberts, but never distributed. Unfortunately, he died while visiting Macau and never reached Japan and Cochichina to distribute the next sets on a new diplomatic mission.
