Quokkas are wallaby-like marsupials found mainly in the south west region of Western Australia, particularly Rottnest Island, an idyllic location 18 kilometres off the Perth coastline. About the same size of domestic cats, furry quokkas are extremely sociable animals blessed with a cute, smiley appearance that’s made them a popular subject for ‘selfies’ in the age of social media.
The coin’s coloured reverse portrays a happy looking quokka sitting on its hind legs among representations of vegetation. Included in the design is the inscription ‘QUOKKA’, the 2024 year-date, and a ‘P125’ mintmark signifying The Perth Mint’s 125th anniversary.
The coin’s obverse portrays the Dan Thorne effigy of His Majesty King Charles III and the weight, purity, and monetary denomination.
Accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity, the coin is housed in a classic display case with clear lid.
The Perth Mint opened in 1899 as the British Royal Mint's 3rd branch in Australia. The historical Hay Street location handled gold refining until moving to a modern facility in April 1990. Ownership of the mint was transferred to the Government of Western Australia in July of 1970. Under an agreement with the Commonwealth Treasury, they were empowered to mint and market gold, silver, and platinum as Australian legal tender to investors and collectors worldwide. Today, they are amongst the elite world mints whose pure gold, silver, and platinum items are trusted without question. Items such as the Australian Nugget, Silver Coin Series (Kangaroo, Kookaburra, Koala, and Platypus to name a few), as well as the Australian Lunar Gold and Silver Coin Series are extensively sought after by bullion investors worldwide.
