1 oz 2022 Niue Year of the Tiger Gold Coin | New Zealand Mint

These beautiful 1 oz Gold Coins were minted by the New Zealand mint to celebrate 2022’s Year of the Tiger! The coins feature the engraving of a paper-cut roaring tiger amongst jungle flowers along with the Chinese character for the word “tiger”, the illustration is framed by edges ornated in a typical Asian pattern.

COIN HIGHLIGHTS

• Obverse: Features an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, her name, the year of release, and the legal tender value of the coin
• Reverse: Features the engraving of a paper-cut tiger among jungle flowers, the Chinese character for “tiger” along with the metal type, weight, and purity; all elements are contained by an intricate ornamental edge

The legend says that the Chinese emperor Jade held a Great Race with animals. The race would determine the first twelve zodiac signs. The first twelve animals to cross a river before the end of the race would be featured in the Zodiac.

The Tiger was one of the favourites to win the race, but the powerful river stream kept sending the big cat in another direction. That did not discourage the confident Tiger, which kept swimming and made it ashore after the Rat and the Ox. The Tiger is the third animal of the Chinese zodiac.

It is said that people born in the Year of the Tiger are determined, brave, and well-liked.
