Product details

This is the second coin in the series commemorating ships that have gone missing in Canadian waters, and makes a perfect gift for history buffs.

The Franklin expedition, led by Captain Sir John Franklin departed England in 1845 in search of a shortcut for shipping between Europe and Asia.

The ships became icebound in the Canadian Arctic, and the whole crew was lost over the course of the next three years.

In spite of the expedition's failure, Franklin was hailed as a hero and credited with the discovery of the Northwest Passage.

The reverse features a beautiful colourized image of H.M.S. Erebus and H.M.S. Terror sailing through ice filled waters in what must have been one of the better moments for the ill-fated voyage.

The right of the field depicts the coast of King William Island, where the crew sheltered, in brilliant proof quality.

The rim of the coin is engraved with the names of both of the expedition's ships.

Mintage of only 7000 ensures that this coin will be treasured for it's rarity as well as it's beautiful design.
