Black Diamond was a massive North American Bison whose infamy remains over a century after its death. Black Diamond was a buffalo homed by the Central Park Zoo, and in 1911 American sculptor James Earle Fraser used the stunning animals image as the base for the 1913 nickel coin. Despite the massive popularity of Black Diamond, when the animal was put up for auction in 1915, it did not receive a single bid. A private sale later saw it sold for $300 where it was quickly slaughtered. The 750lbs of useable meat from the animal were made into "Black Diamond steaks" and sold for $2/pound.
These Buffalo Replica Silver Rounds are modeled after the Buffalo Nickels (Indian Head Nickels) which were minted by U.S. mints from 1913 through 1938 in copper-nickel composition and designed by James Earle Fraser. With the wild popularity of buffalo nickels, SilverTowne has minted Buffalo Replicas annually for over a decade. The SilverTowne replica is not dated on the obverse making it a replica then the reverse features the buffalo with the "FIVE CENTS" replaced with the weight and purity designation of "1/10oz 999 FINE SILVER".
The SilverTowne Mint has become well known for producing high quality, affordable, bullion products with exceptional purity standards.
