The coin's reverse features the distinctive Iberian lynx's head and the name of the animal in Spanish (Lince Iberico), along with the mint's mark, year of the release and legal tender value of the coin.

The obverse features one of the world's most recognized Spanish imagery regarding currency, and the symbol was featured in the Spanish empire coins circulating throughout the world for centuries. It consists of two globes representing the Western and Eastern hemispheres under a crown between the Pillars of Hercules and the words "PLUS VLTRA" (Further Beyond in Latin).

The Iberian lynx is an endangered big cat species native to the Iberian Peninsula forests. These animals were on the brink of extinction, with less than 100 specimens at one point due to loss of habitat, human activity and a decrease in food base, which caught the attention of conservation groups and NGOs that managed to develop successful projects to increase and protect their population.

Iberian lynxes are heavily spotted, with long legs, a short black-tipped tail, distinctively prominent black ear tufts and beard-like hair coming down their chin.
